Is it required that my family dentist refer me to schedule an appointment?
Not necessarily. Although some of our patients are referred by their family dentist, many patients schedule examinations on their own.
At what age is it appropriate to schedule an appointment for orthodontic consulting?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic screening at age 7. By this age we can effectively evaluate your child’s orthodontic condition because many permanent teeth will have already erupted.
Is it possible for my child’s teeth to naturally straighten out as they grow older?
The space available for the front teeth does not increase as you grow, therefore they will not straighten out. Generally, after the permanent molars erupt, the space available for the front teeth will decreases with age.
What happens during the initial examination appointment?
The initial exam is used for getting the patient acclimated with the doctor, staff, and environment. Photographs and X-rays of the patient will be taken to ensure that a proper diagnosis is done. Upon completion, the Orthodontist will then conduct a brief examination.
What questions will the first examination address?
· Whether or not you need braces
· What action will be taken to correct the problem
· Different options to correcting the problem
· Length of treatment
· Cost of treatment
Will it be required that I have my teeth removed for treatment?
It is sometimes required to remove teeth to ensure the best orthodontic result. However, there are alternatives to removing teeth which may be equally as effective.

Treatment time varies depending on the patient’s specific needs. The average time frame is roughly 18-24 months. How you maintain your braces can increase or decrease treatment time as well.

Appointments are typically scheduled every 4 to 8 weeks. However situations requiring more frequent monitoring will be scheduled accordingly. If there is an emergency, it is critical that you call our office so that we can fit you in and fix the problem.
Do braces really hurt?
Braces do not hurt. However, it is true that your teeth, gums, and mouth may be sore for a few days because the teeth are shifting. Best advice is to take some pain medication to ease the discomfort. On the other hand, there will be times where you mouth is not sore at all!
